The Comic Relief charity organisation was founded in 1986 by a team of crack comedians, namely Richard Curtis and Alexander Mendis to help provide a charitable contribution in response to the famine in Ethiopia.  To date it’s raised millions towards the cause and provided similar help around the world.

In more recent times it’s diversified it’s charitable output to help more in Britain, but the majority of the money still heads to Africa.  This is the problem we have with it.  Whilst we appreciate the need to help our fellow humans around the world there is a worsening degree of poverty in this country that must be curtailed.

We’re in the midst of a social disaster and personally I don’t feel that sending a boat load of money abroad is conducive to stopping this terrible event.  We have a situation where we’re sending large amounts of cash abroad and not thinking about the people here who desperately need help.

There are families in Britain today who can’t feel their children because they’ve been made unemployed or have lost their houses because they cannot pay the mortgage, it’s a serious situation and we should be thinking about those on our doorsteps.

So what can we do?

By all means if you’re that way inclined give money to Comic Relief, there’s still many people who need help in this world but spare a though for those in the UK who need help urgently and cannot get it.  We may well be a welfare state but in times of recession and social hardship we need to be thinking of people closer to home.

We won’t be changing the design of the site this year, frankly we can’t be bothered and secondly we don’t think it would be right to give support to a charity where most of the money doesn’t help those in need in this so called First World Country.
