Birmingham Central Library Vs. Library of Birmingham

Posted in Regeneration & Thoughts on Things... at 16:03 on Sunday, June 30th, 2013 by Mr. Rant

In a couple of months times the new Library of Birmingham will open and we (the people of Birmingham) will beckon in a new generation of absurdly designed supposedly fit for purpose crazy looking buildings, sounds familiar doesn’t it? The planners in Birmingham have a history of approving slightly bizarre looking things, to name but a few; The Selfridges end of the Bullring, The Rotunda, and lets not forget the original Central Library, a much oft blogged about thing here at The Rantastic.

As we move into the new Library of Birmingham one would hope that maybe Birmingham Library services finally has a place to store it’s treasures for the future seeing at the Old Central Library did nothing to help their preservation and by several accounts have systematically shortened their life spans, but lets not think about that now, lets instead focus on moving forward into a new dimension of librarial goodness, but alas we cannot.

For now there is a battle brewing, one that has been brewing for a while since the new library was announced, one that seems to heat up each time the dreaded demolition is spoken.  Yes, people want to keep the Central Library. I can understand their logic, I love architecture and I understand the attraction of a brutalist design, just have a look at Auchinleck House on Broad Street, Birmingham, that’s a classic 60’s design and to be honest it’s hideous but I like it, and I’d like to see it stay but times move on and buildings have their day and sometimes, when they’re not fit for the purpose for which they were built it’s time for them to go.  Hence, it’s time for the Central Library to bow it’s head to the executioners axe and have it’s remains laid to rest.

So can we please, please, get on to enjoying our new Library and start to forget about the old one?

    I’ve done the unthinkable…

Yes you’ve guessed it, I’ve quit smoking… I’ll let you pick your jaw up for a second.  For years I’ve been a smoker, spending literally thousands of pounds on my twenty-a-day habit.  I think it’s time for me to say goodbye to tobacc0 and say hello to my bike and get fit.

Over the years I’ve been criticised for being a smoker and now I will probably be the one being critical of other, so Oi, yeah you with the fag, come here… Give us a drag, I’m gagging for it…

    Not Quite there yet then…

Above there is a coundown timer… Lets see how far I can get!

    Lets bugger the economy up….

I’m sure that’s what Alistair Darling has been thinking during the preparations for the Pre-Budget speech he gave today.  I think it’s important to note that; we are in dire straits with the current financial climate and that we should patch together some kind of rescue plan for the country but not by risking the future for everyone.

Alistair Darling... What game are you playing?

Alistair Darling... What game are you playing?

It would seem that we’re in deeper than anyone would care to mention and this is of course a worry statistic.  In Darling’s speech he outline several tax exceptions and cost cutting measures that will hopefully help the economy to recover as quickly as possible, when you say quickly, you think months, and certainly not years, but Darling is planning to have this all buttoned up by somewhere around 2015 – 2016, that’s eight years away.

This worries me and I’m sure it does a great deal of other people.  The next few years are to be hard ones.  Taking into account that the debt of the country will even out at around half a trillion pounds, thats bad enough, but when you work out that there are roughly 60,776,238 people (that’s a rough estimate and is probably a little higher), in the UK, you soon discover that the total national debt per head lies at around; £8,226.90 by 2016, that’s still a high price to pay for bringing this recession under control quickly.

iPhone Number Two – Part Two

Posted in Regeneration & Thoughts on Things... & What were you thinking? at 16:32 on Thursday, November 6th, 2008 by Mr. Rant

So it was replaced yesterday and it’s still looking good, no cracks as yet.  But there is a new problem which has been occurring on and off for a few days now, it concerns the taking and receiving of calls.

It would seem that O2 have decided that they don’t like me and won’t let me take calls when I’m at home, well that’s not strictly true.  It seems that if you have your 3G connection on, for some reason if you live in the vicinity of my house you won’t be able to receive calls or indeed make them, fairly worrying for a phone really.

Yes, I’ve spoken to O2 at length about the issues and they’ve advised me to make a note of when the problem occurs and how often and then in their inimitable style they’ll look into the fault and make an attempt to resolve it.

Let’s hope it’s soon because 2G is so slow, and it’s annoying that I can’t use my iPhone to it’s full potential.
