The beginning of the end for the web…

Posted in Anger Level 4 & Breaking News & Censorship & Public Information & Technology & Tragedies at 16:43 on Saturday, January 21st, 2012 by Mr. Rant

This week saw widespread blackouts on some prominent websites, including this one.

The blackouts were in protest to the now, possibly defunct Sopa and Pipa movements chaired in the US law system. The bill had now been dropped or at least put on the backburner for now, but the Internet is changing.

On Wednesday, the file sharing website MegaUpload was shut down by the FBI and it’s creators arrested and it’s content destroyed, the people behind the action was once again the MPA and the copyright Nazi’s.

Now I hate people stealing my work as much as the next person but the US administration is going after the wrong people. They’re fighting the site owners, data centre’s and hosting companies and accusing them of breaking the law, when they didn’t put the content there it was the users who did.

Yes, you can argue that they should be more proactive and stop users uploading copyrighted material but it’s not as easy as that.

Take this website, the servers are US based so therefore we fall under their jurisdiction and have to adhere to their laws, however its developed and ran in the UK so has to adhere to the UK’s laws too, so where does it stop?

Do we need to adhere to everything to keep everyone happy? In short, yes but that’s practically impossible.

Just expect more sites to disappear over the next few months as the governments fight a loosing battle, and a backlash is likely to rise.

    The Internet vs. Jan Moir

Posted in Breaking News & Thoughts on Things... & Tragedies at 20:46 on Friday, October 16th, 2009 by Mr. Rant

When you think that journalists can’t get any worse they always manage to surpass themselves.  Today Jan Moir; a Daily Mail columnist has posted a rather defamatory and extremely offensive article relating to Stephen Gately’s untimely demise.

In the article Moir seems to contemplate upon her exclusive thought that Gately’s death was not of natural causes but something all together more sinister, focusing on his gay lifestyle as being a key cause to his death, which according to the coronor is simply not the case.

“The sugar coating on this fatality is so saccharine-thick that it obscures whatever bitter truth lies beneath. Healthy and fit 33-year-old men do not just climb into their pyjamas and go to sleep on the sofa, never to wake up again.”

Moir has seemingly turned over two pages in her medical dictionary.  Young men do die, and women for that matter at very young ages, it’s called Sudden Adult Death Syndrome and is a very recognised and documented cause for death in younger patients.  Once you’ve read Moir’s article (stand still the link will be at the end) you will see why such outrage has been caused by her.  She doesn’t grasp that it is okay to be homosexual and that this is not a cause of death, her views are best left in the 30’s where she should be left with them.

This afternoon Moir posted a statement on the Independent Minds (A popular place for journalousts), stating that the comments regarding her prose have been:

“…a heavily orchestrated internet campaign I think it is mischievous in the extreme to suggest that my article has homophobic and bigoted undertones.”

A lot of people are mischievous but most of the comments regarding your article have been justified in outing your homophobic and narrow minded view of the world.  I personally think she misunderstands the term ‘orchestrated’.  This campaign has not been pre-planned at all, we are simply speaking our minds and telling You what we think of your article, and rightly so, we are allowed to speak our minds as are you, we are not attempting to string you up, we are telling you, you are wrong.

If you can’t write an article with an ounce of truth expect a public backlash, be it online, on television or in printed media.  Grow up Jan Moir, you can’t make excuses for this one.

Read the full article click here.

    Read Moir’s statement here.

    The end of an era…

Posted in Tragedies at 1:03 on Friday, January 9th, 2009 by Mr. Rant

So Woolworths has now closed all of it’s stores and business operations across the UK.  It’s been something which has been accepted badly, nobody wanted to see it happen but nobody could save it.  It’s a funny old thing; business.  Sometimes things just don’t work out.

    This store has now closed.

    This store has now closed.

We’ve seen a corporation which has existed for ninety-nine years crumble and all it’s stores end up as a cavernous wreckage of memories and regret.  It brings a tear to my eye to see my local Woolworths closed and empty, even the sign on the outside has been removed, leaving just a stained brick pattern behind it.

There are now twenty-seven thousand people left jobless and hopeless, this climate of economical challenge has certainly made it’s mark.  I just wonder to myself which business will be next.

But… If anyone is interested I have a six foot high Woolworths sign for sale at a very reasonable price…

Another disaster for the British Tourist Industry…

Posted in Tragedies at 23:56 on Tuesday, July 29th, 2008 by Mr. Rant

I must say that recently has not been the best time for the tourist industry in this country; firstly people aren’t going away at the moment, due to the Credit Crunch, of course this shouldn’t be a factor with regard to UK based holidays, however it seems to be the case which of course makes life very difficult for the UK resorts, such as Weston-Super-Mare (WSM) which yesterday suffered yet another mighty blow to its business.

With Monday came an awful disaster the much loved pier at WSM was raised to the ground (I never understood that phrase, but it’s fitting so I shall use it). Much to the dismay of every single Brummie, the pavilion built in the mid thirties was utterly destroyed by the ferocious fire which ravished the pier. I was shocked, truly and suddenly to the core; that pier was a family haunt for years each holiday, and to lose it in such a way has been truly disastrous. You must remember dear reader, that for most of us; things such as WSM’s pier formed a major part of our childhood right into adulthood.

Until we know the cause of this event all we can do is hope that it can be rebuilt, hope and pray that a savior is in the offing.
